The short version
- Without an account, your pets and meal logs stay on your phone.
- If you sign in with Apple, your data is backed up to our servers so it syncs and can be shared with family.
- No ads, no behavioral analytics, no cross-app tracking, no location, no advertising identifiers.
- We do collect anonymous purchase data to see which of our marketing works.
- We never sell your data.
What data the app handles
- Pet profiles — your pet's name, species, breed, sex, birthday, weight and body-condition history, diet preferences, allergies, and optionally a profile photo.
- Meal logs — ingredients and amounts you enter, commercial foods you scan or search for, and the nutrition analysis the app computes.
- Account information (only if you sign in) — Sign in with Apple gives us an account ID and an email address (which can be Apple's private relay address if you choose "Hide My Email"), and your first name on first sign-in. We use your first name as a display name you can change.
- Family sharing (only if you use it) — which family you belong to, your role, and invite codes. Your display name is shown to family members next to the meals you log.
- Subscription status — whether you have PetFuel Pro, verified through Apple and RevenueCat.
- App settings and reminders — preferences such as units and theme, and meal reminders, which are scheduled on your device.
What we do NOT collect
- We don't collect your location.
- We don't use advertising identifiers (IDFA) or track you across other apps and websites.
- We don't use behavioral analytics or advertising tools. (We do measure purchases anonymously — see below.)
- We don't see or store your payment details — Apple handles all payments.
- We don't sell your data to anyone.
Where your data is stored
On your device. By default, everything is stored locally on your iPhone. Meal photos and your pet's profile photo stay on your device (except label photos you choose to share — see "Shared food catalog" below).
On our servers, if you sign in. When you sign in with Apple, your pet profiles, meal logs, weight and body-condition entries, and family membership are stored with our hosting provider, Supabase, so they can sync across devices and be shared with family members you invite. Data is encrypted in transit. Our servers may be located outside Canada, including in the United States, where it may be subject to local laws.
Camera and photos
PetFuel uses your camera to scan barcodes and product labels and to photograph a meal, and your photo library so you can choose a profile photo for your pet. We only access them when you use those features.
When you use the AI photo feature ("Snap") or scan a nutrition label, that photo is sent to Google's Gemini AI service to estimate the meal or read the label. Google processes it under its own terms. We don't keep a copy on our servers unless you choose to share label photos with the shared food catalog. Avoid including people or personal information in these photos.
Services we share data with
We share data only with the services that make the app work:
- Apple — Sign in with Apple and App Store purchases.
- Supabase — hosts account, sync, and family-sharing data if you sign in, and PetFuel's shared food catalog.
- Apple App Attest — confirms, once per install, that catalog contributions come from a genuine copy of PetFuel.
- RevenueCat — confirms your subscription status using an anonymous app user ID and your App Store purchase records. See RevenueCat's privacy policy.
- Sentry — receives crash and performance reports so we can fix bugs. See "Crash reports" below.
- Google (Gemini) — processes photos you submit to the AI photo and label-scan features.
- USDA FoodData Central — receives the ingredient searches you type, to look up nutrition values.
- Open Pet Food Facts — receives barcodes and product searches to look up commercial foods.
- Family members you invite — see the pets you share with them, their logs, and your display name.
Each of these services has its own privacy policy. We may also disclose information if required by law.
Purchase and marketing measurement
To understand which of our marketing (creator videos, promo codes and ads) leads to downloads and subscriptions, we collect a small amount of anonymous purchase data:
- Purchase events from RevenueCat. When you start a trial, subscribe, renew, cancel or get a refund, RevenueCat sends us a record of that event: an anonymous app-generated user ID, the product, price and currency, your country, the dates, and any promo code or campaign it was linked to. We store these records in a separate database (also hosted by Supabase) to count trials, customers and revenue. They are not linked to your PetFuel account, pets or logs.
This data never includes your name, email, pets, meals or photos. We do not use your advertising identifier (IDFA), do not ask to track you, do not combine this data with data from other companies to profile you, and do not use it to show you ads. We keep it only as long as we need it for business and accounting records.
Crash reports
We use Sentry to collect crash reports and performance data so we can fix bugs. These reports contain technical details about the crash (device model, OS version, what the app was doing) — never your name, email, pets, meals or photos. See Sentry's privacy policy.
Shared food catalog
PetFuel keeps a shared catalog of commercial pet foods so other owners can find a product instantly. When you scan or log a commercial food that isn't already in it, the product details — barcode, brand, product name, size, ingredients, calories, guaranteed analysis, and any "complete and balanced" claim — are added to the catalog. When you scan a barcode, it's looked up in the catalog. You can also confirm or report catalog entries.
If you photograph a label, the app asks whether to share it. Choosing "Share it" also sends the label photos; "No thanks" sends nothing from that scan. Catalog contributions are linked to a random device ID, not to your account, name, or pets.
Contributing to Open Pet Food Facts (optional)
There's an optional setting, off by default, to help build the public pet-food database. If you turn it on, details from labels you confirm — barcode, product name, brand, size, ingredients, calories, guaranteed analysis, and any "complete and balanced" claim — are sent to Open Pet Food Facts and published openly. We don't send your name, account, or pet information with it.
Nutritional data and accuracy
For home-cooked and ingredient-based meals, nutritional values are computed from the USDA FoodData Central database. For commercially-produced pet foods, we display only what's published: calories, macros, and whether the product is labeled "complete and balanced."
PetFuel provides nutritional information only — it is not a substitute for veterinary advice. Consult your veterinarian for any health or medical concerns.
Keeping and deleting your data
- On your device — Settings → "Delete all data" erases your pets and logs from your phone. Deleting the app also removes them.
- On our servers — to delete your account and the data stored with it, email support@petfuel.app from the email linked to your Apple ID (or tell us your account's relay address). We'll delete it within 30 days, including from our hosting provider's automatic backups.
- Family data — if you leave or delete a family, meals you logged for pets owned by someone else may remain in their records.
- Not linked to your account — shared food catalog contributions are tied to a random device ID rather than your account, so they aren't removed when you delete your account. Anything you chose to share with Open Pet Food Facts is held by that third party under its own policies.
Deleting your data doesn't cancel a PetFuel Pro subscription — cancel it in your Apple Account settings (Settings → your name → Subscriptions).
Your rights
Depending on where you live, including under Canada's privacy laws, you can ask to access, correct, or delete your personal information, or withdraw your consent. Email us at the address below and we'll respond within 30 days. If you're not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or your local privacy authority.
Children
PetFuel is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes to this policy
If we update this policy, the new version will be posted here with an updated date.
What changed
- October 2026: This policy now mentions crash reporting: the app sends crash and performance reports to Sentry so we can fix bugs. These have always been part of the app; they contain technical details only, never your name, email or personal content.
- October 2026: We now receive anonymous purchase records (trials, subscriptions, renewals, refunds) from RevenueCat to see which of our marketing works. No name, email, or app data is included, and we don't track you. See "Purchase and marketing measurement" above.
